a nerdfighter’s dilemma

saw tfios a few weeks ago at the seattle international film festival and it was good and all but i seriously could not have been more embarrassed by the fans

when i used to tell people that my favorite book was the fault in our stars, i would explain the plot and if they were interested i would talk about some of the symbols and cool themes from the book and talk about the amazing community of fans john and hank have created and how it’s made me feel so connected to the book

and when i went to the movie, laura dern (who plays hazel’s mom) was there doing a q&a afterwards, and i was just so unbelievably disappointed when the first question someone asked her was “can you tell ansel we think he’s super hot and we’re in love with him?”

and now my favorite book has a movie adaptation that anyone could be happy with (especially as far as movie adaptations go) but there’s no way i can call myself a a nerdfighter anymore if that means grouping myself with the people who are simply interested in watching the movie for the hot boy and his cheesy lines (admittedly very great, faithful-to-the-book, and charming cheesy lines, but still not the sole reason the book is important and wonderful)

i’d be the first to say that tfios is an amazing book and deserves it’s recognition, i’m just so upset that this particular type of recognition is what it’s getting.

i’m also going to note that i am being a total and complete hypocrite. when i was fourteen, i acted towards the hunger games the same way fourteen year olds are acting towards tfios today. i guess i just thought that tfios was a better, more emotionally impacting book than thg, so it deserved a different type of recognition. it just kills me to see tfios being marketed towards tweens and treated kind of childishly, to be honest. it’s a great movie and a great book, but the fan following, which was originally what attracted me to the fault in our stars back in 2012, is now embarrassing me and ruining the relationship i had with my favorite book, favorite author, and favorite youtube channel. and i’m just so upset.

"I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories. On the one hand, you can sugarcoat it. Nothing is too messed up that can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version as much as the next girl does. It’s just not the truth." (x)
